Classroom Management, Lessons & Activities
Because being an effective teacher requires you to motivate your students to learn something new, I-TEFL will help you develop your skills in:
Organizing the classroom space
Student testing and placement
Setting learning obejctives
Timing and sequencing lessons
Creating fun and engaging games with available classroom materials
Fostering student interest and motivation to learn
Application of Language Acquisition Theory
Language acquisition specialists will discuss the latest research in the field. Participants in I-TEFL will use this cutting-edge research to develop their own new approaches to teaching English that compliment traditional methods in their home countries.
Observations and Micro-teaching
The UW is home to International & English Language Programs (IELP), a large and diverse nationally recognized center that serves over 2,000 international students each year. During I-TEFL, participants will have an opportunity to observe and interact with the UW's IELP instructors. Using knowledge gained from the observations and other program content, participants will also prepare and present lesson plans to their peers on a daily basis.
Independent Research Project and Final Presentation
During the course of the certificate program, all participants will be expected to conduct research on a particular teaching method of their interest. At the conclusion of the program each participant will make a 20-30 minute presentation about the method and provide sample lesson plans and lessons based on the method. The participant will demonstrate a lesson and provide other participants with materials to implement the lesson in their own ways.
The program also provides social activities, including a welcome reception, campus tour, weekly coffee hour with program staff and a catered closing ceremony.
